About This Blog
What a privilege and honor it has been to serve Jesus as
Baptist missionaries in Thailand. I recently read that only 1 or 2 percent of
the US population gets to live in some other country for any length of time. Since
it is not so common, we thought there might be some interest in seeing what our
experience was like. We also wanted to leave some sort of record at least for
our family to help them remember our time.
At the same time, what a dilemma! Ektachrome slides, prints
and digital images numbering in the thousands are stored away. Hundreds of
aerograms, some hand written and some written on floppy disks and printed on dot
matrix printers have been saved for us by family. There are hundreds more
newsletters, articles, sermons, talks, etc. Some things are carefully saved,
some carelessly saved but all of it needs to be dealt with.
So our intentions are to sort, scan, write up, delete, save,
record, throw away or destroy the collected photos and memorabilia. The plan is
to do this by writing short stories and recording them in this blog. While it
may turn out to be semi-chronological the overall idea is to record the stories
as we come across them in the storage boxes or photo files. Our intention is also
to relate the overall journey. Not all stories will be serious or spiritual
though we hope some are. Likewise, not
all stories will be humorous, though we hope some bring a smile or even a
chuckle.
When we first went to Thailand, it seemed many of the
veteran missionaries were avid story tellers so we’ll try to carry on that
tradition in this blog. Not all of their stories made it as sermon
illustrations but they were good stories all the same. While some of their stories might have been
“slightly” enhanced with the passage of time and the selective nature of memory
we vow to keep our stories true to our memories and true to our experience.
We loved living the journey the Lord made for us and hope
you enjoy re-living it with us.
